History

The Molehead is a protected point of land at Boro Station, where the Dakatia river runs into the Meghna. A short way upstream the Padma joins the Meghna, so from here you look out over one of the great river meetings of the delta — locals often call it the meeting of three rivers.

The point was built up with concrete blocks to hold back the strong currents and erosion that have long threatened the town. It has become Chandpur’s favourite open space, where people come to watch the launches, the fishing boats and the sunset over the water.

Right beside it is the fish ghat, where hilsa boats unload and buyers bid for the catch — the best place to see why Chandpur is called the City of Hilsa.

Travel tips

  • The currents here are very strong: never swim, and keep away from the edge of the concrete blocks, especially in the monsoon.
  • If you take a boat out, agree on the trip first, check that life jackets are on board and avoid rough weather and dark.
  • Visit the fish ghat in the morning to see the catch come in.
  • Check the dates of the hilsa fishing ban before planning a fish trip.
  • Weekends and holidays are crowded; weekday evenings are calmer.
