History

The Dharla comes down from the Himalayan foothills through India, enters Bangladesh in Lalmonirhat and flows past Kurigram town before joining the Brahmaputra. Like the district’s other rivers, it floods in the monsoon and erodes its banks, and the embankment along the town is part of the effort to hold it back.

For visitors, the riverside is Kurigram’s everyday escape: in the dry season the water draws back to reveal broad sandbanks, and in the evening families, students and tea sellers gather on the embankment and near the bridge.

Travel tips

  • Late afternoon and sunset are the best times.
  • Do not swim; the current can be strong, especially in the monsoon.
  • Take boat rides only with local boatmen in calm weather.
  • Keep off the bridge carriageway and watch for traffic.
  • In winter, evenings get cold quickly; bring a warm layer.
