History

Dharmasagar is named after Maharaja Dharma Manikya of Tripura, who had it dug in the 15th century, when the plains around Cumilla were part of the Tripura kingdom. Tanks like this gave the town drinking water and were also acts of royal charity.

The tank is one of the largest in the country, and over the centuries the town grew up around it. Today its banks are lined with trees and paths, and on its edge stands the Rani Kuthi, an old building connected with the Tripura royal family.

In the evening the banks fill with families, students and snack sellers, and the breeze off the water makes it the best place in town to end the day.
