History

The safari park at Dulahazara, in Chakaria, lies beside the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar highway. It was set up in 1999 in a stretch of hill forest, and it was the first safari park in Bangladesh.

Animals live in large fenced areas of natural forest rather than small cages. Visitors follow paths and roads through the park past Bengal tigers, lions, Asian elephants, bears, several kinds of deer, crocodiles and many birds, with watch towers for looking out over the enclosures.

It is an easy break on the long road to or from Cox’s Bazar, and a good half day with children who have had enough of the beach.

Travel tips

  • There is an entry ticket; check the current opening days and hours before you plan a stop.
  • Arrive early: animals are easier to see in the cool of the morning.
  • Do not feed the animals, tap on fences or make loud noises near the enclosures.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and carry water; the park is large and the paths are long.
  • If you are breaking a bus journey, leave your luggage safe and agree how you will catch an onward bus.
