History

Himchari is the first stop on the Marine Drive south of Cox’s Bazar, where forested hills come right down to the road and the beach. It lies within Himchari National Park, a protected area of hill forest set up to conserve the coastal woodland and its wildlife.

The two reasons to come are the waterfall, which runs strongly in the rainy season and thins to a trickle in winter, and the long flight of steps to the hilltop, from where you can see the beach curving away in both directions.

It is a short trip from town and an easy half day, often combined with Inani further down the same road.

Travel tips

  • There is an entry ticket for the park; keep it until you leave.
  • The steps to the hilltop are long and steep: wear proper shoes, carry water, and go early before the heat.
  • The rocks around the waterfall are slippery, especially in the rainy season — do not climb on them.
  • Do not feed or tease monkeys, and keep food in your bag.
  • Do not swim off the beach here; there are usually no lifeguards.
