History

For most of history the upazilas of Itna, Mithamoin and Austagram were cut off for half the year, reachable only by boat when the haors filled. The all-weather road that now links them, opened around 2020, was built high above the flood level so that it stays open even at the height of the monsoon.

The road quickly became one of the country’s most photographed places. In the rainy season it runs for kilometres with water on both sides as far as the eye can see; in winter it crosses green and then golden rice fields.

For the people of the haors it changed daily life, bringing markets, schools and hospitals closer. For visitors it is a way to see the heart of the haor country from the land.

Best time to visit

July to October for water on both sides; December to April for green and golden rice fields.

How to get there

The road lies deep in the haors east of Kishoreganj town. Routes in change with the season and with new roads and bridges: in the monsoon most visitors take a boat from Chamraghat in Karimganj towards Mithamoin, and in the dry season roads reach further. Ask in Kishoreganj town for the current best route.

Getting around

  • Most visitors travel the road by CNG auto-rickshaw or motorbike, hired in the upazila towns.
  • In the monsoon, engine boats connect the road with the ghats on the haor’s edge.

Travel tips

  • Do not stop or stand in the carriageway for photos; vehicles move fast on the open road.
  • Wear a helmet if you ride a motorbike, and avoid riding after dark.
  • Wear life jackets on any boat crossing and avoid stormy weather.
  • There is little shade: carry water, a hat and sunscreen.
  • Facilities are limited; eat and refuel in the upazila towns.
