History

Khoiyachora is a waterfall in the forested hills of Mirsharai, north of Chattogram. Rather than a single drop, the stream falls down the hillside in a series of steps, each with its own pool, so the higher you climb the more falls you find.

It was little known outside the area until around 2010, when travellers began to write about it; since then it has become one of the most visited waterfalls in the country. The forest around it is part of the Sitakunda–Mirsharai hill range and still feels wild, with bamboo, tall trees and birdsong.

Getting there is half the experience: a walk through village fields and then along a rocky stream bed and forest path, crossing the water several times. The waterfall is at its most powerful in the monsoon and just after, when the hills are greenest; in the dry season the flow is much thinner.

Tour plans

Take a Dhaka-bound bus from Chattogram in the early morning and get off for Khoiyachora.

  2. Step 2: Find a guide and order lunch

At the trailhead, take a local guide and order lunch at a village eatery for your return.

  3. Step 3: The forest walk

Follow the stream through the forest to the main fall, taking care on the wet rocks.

  4. Step 4: Rest at the pools

Cool off at the lower pools; climb higher only if the rocks and the weather allow.

  5. Step 5: Lunch and the road home

Walk back, eat the lunch you ordered, and catch a bus to Chattogram from the highway.

Plan your visit

Best time to visit

July to October, when the falls are full. Avoid days of heavy rain, when the stream can rise suddenly.

How to get there

Get off a highway bus at Boro Takia in Mirsharai, then walk or take a CNG to the trail. The forest walk takes about an hour each way; a local guide helps.

Getting around

  • From the highway, a village road leads to the start of the trail; you can walk it or take a CNG part of the way.
  • From there it is on foot only: field paths, then the stream bed and forest trail, with several crossings of the water. Allow about an hour each way.
  • The lower falls are reached without real climbing; the upper steps need scrambling up steep rock and are only for the sure-footed.
  • Local guides wait near the trailhead and know the safest route.

Travel tips

  • The rocks are very slippery. Wear shoes or sandals with a firm grip and straps — not flip-flops — and expect to get wet.
  • Do not climb to the upper steps in heavy rain or if you are unsure of your footing; people have been badly hurt here.
  • Leeches are common in the wet season: wear long socks, carry salt, and check your legs after the walk.
  • Go with a local guide or a group, start in the morning, and be out of the forest well before dark.
  • Carry water and a dry bag for your phone; there are only a few stalls on the way.
  • Do not leave rubbish in the stream or forest.
