History

Majuchowdhury Hat is where Lakshmipur meets the Meghna. Here the river, swollen by the Padma and the upper Meghna and close to the sea, is so wide that the far bank is often lost in haze. The ghat is the district’s main crossing to Bhola, the island district on the other side.

Like every market on this river, it lives by the water: ferries and launches come and go, trawlers bring in fish, and in the hilsa season the landing is crowded with boats and traders. Behind it, embankments hold back the river that has taken so much land elsewhere along this coast.

For visitors it is simply a good place to watch the river — the boats, the chars on the horizon and, above all, the sunset over the Meghna.

Travel tips

  • Arrive an hour before sunset and walk along the embankment.
  • If you take a boat out, wear a life jacket, agree on the trip first and return before dark.
  • Stay off the river during storms and cyclone signals; in the monsoon the Meghna is rough.
  • Ferry and launch timings to Bhola change — check locally if you plan to cross.
  • The ghat is a working port: watch your step and your belongings in the crowd.
