History

The Muhuri Irrigation Project was built to control the Feni and Muhuri rivers near the coast: a long embankment and a sluice gate hold back the sea tides and store fresh water for the farmland of the surrounding area.

The dam created a wide reservoir that has become one of the region’s favourite outings. From the embankment you look over open water, fishing boats and, on clear days, the hills of Tripura in the distance.

In winter the reservoir and the surrounding wetlands draw migratory birds, and the area is also known for fishing. Visitors come for long walks on the embankment, boat rides and the sunset over the water.

November to February for birds and dry weather; late afternoon for the sunset

How to get there

In Sonagazi upazila, south of Feni town: take a bus or CNG towards Sonagazi and on to the project, roughly an hour; hiring a CNG for the round trip is easiest.

Travel tips

  • The sluice gate is a working structure: keep to the public areas and follow any instructions from staff.
  • Do not swim — the water near the gate can be deep and fast.
  • If you take a boat, agree on the trip first and check for life jackets.
  • Bring binoculars in winter for the birds, and do not disturb them.
  • There is little shade on the embankment; carry water and a hat.
  • Head back before dark, as transport thins out in the evening.
