Culture

Life on the Ramgati and Kamalnagar chars follows the river and the seasons: hilsa fishing in the monsoon and autumn, soybean and winter crops on the dry land, and buffalo herds moved between the chars. Families here have often rebuilt their homes more than once as the bank has moved.

History

In Ramgati and Kamalnagar the Meghna is close to its mouth, and land and water are constantly trading places. New chars rise from the silt while the river eats into the eastern bank; over the decades erosion has taken homes, roads and markets, and embankments now guard much of the shore.

The char lands are a world of their own: families who farm soybean and rice on newly risen ground, herd buffalo across the mudflats and fish the river for hilsa. The upazila town is known as Alexander.

For travellers the attraction is the scale of it — a brown river that stretches to the horizon, open sky, and sunsets over the chars. Riverside spots here have become popular with day-trippers from across the district.

How to get there

Ramgati lies south of Lakshmipur town along the Meghna, through Kamalnagar. Take a local bus or CNG from town to Ramgati’s upazila town, Alexander, roughly 1.5–2 hours, then a rickshaw or auto-rickshaw to the embankment.

Travel tips

  • Keep away from the edge of eroding banks, especially in the monsoon when the river is high and fast.
  • If you take a boat to a char, wear a life jacket, agree on the trip first and come back well before dark — tides can strand boats on the mudflats.
  • Stay off the river during storms and cyclone signals.
  • Facilities are basic; carry water, a hat and some cash.
  • Ask before photographing people on the chars, and keep a respectful distance from buffalo herds.
