History

Risang is a waterfall in Matiranga upazila, close to Khagrachhari town, and one of the best-known in the hill district. The name is Marma, and the falls lie in an area of Marma villages.

The water first drops from a rock ledge, then runs down a long, gently sloping face of smooth rock into a pool below. That slope is what makes Risang famous: people sit at the top and slide down it on the rushing water — fun, but genuinely risky, as the rock is hard and slippery.

The way down from the road passes through hills, jhum fields and orchards, with the sound of the falls growing as you go.

Plan your visit

Best time to visit

June to October, when the falls are full; in the dry months the flow drops a lot.

How to get there

About 10–11 km from Khagrachhari town on the Matiranga road, a little beyond Alutila: about 20–30 minutes by CNG or jeep to the turning, then a walk down a steep path and steps to the falls.

Travel tips

  • Think twice before sliding down the rock: people have been hurt here. If you do, go slowly, and never in heavy flow after rain.
  • Wear shoes with good grip; the steps and rocks are slippery, especially in the monsoon.
  • The walk back up is steep — bring water and take your time.
  • There may be a small entry fee; go in daylight and leave before dusk.
  • Carry your ID for checkpoints, and take your rubbish back with you.
