Cox's Bazar is one of the most popular trips out of Dhaka, and the bus is how most travellers get there. It is a long ride, so a little planning makes a big difference.
How far is it, and how long does it take?
The road from Dhaka to Cox's Bazar is roughly 400 kilometres. The journey usually takes most of a night or most of a day. Expect anything from around nine hours to noticeably longer, because traffic leaving Dhaka and on the highway varies a lot by day and season. Treat the arrival time on your ticket as an estimate, and avoid planning anything tight for the hour you are due to arrive.
Day bus or night bus?
Night departures are the common choice. You board in the evening, sleep through much of the trip and arrive in the morning with the whole day ahead of you. Roads are usually calmer at night.
Day departures suit travellers who do not sleep well on buses, families with small children, and anyone who wants to see the countryside on the way.
Choosing a bus
- AC buses cost more and are much more comfortable on a journey this long, especially in the hot months
- Non-AC buses are the budget option and are fine in cooler weather
- Seat layout matters overnight: more legroom and a seat that reclines properly make it far easier to sleep
- Boarding point: Dhaka is large, so pick the boarding point nearest to you rather than crossing the city in evening traffic
Check the fare rules before you pay, so you know whether the ticket can be cancelled or moved if your plans change.
Where to sit
- A seat in the middle of the bus usually gives the smoothest ride
- Window seats are better for sleeping, since you have something to lean on
- Aisle seats are easier if you expect to get up during breaks
- The very back row tends to feel bumps the most
What to bring
- A light jacket or shawl, because AC buses can get cold at night
- Water and a few snacks, though buses normally stop for a meal break on the way
- A neck pillow and an eye mask if you plan to sleep
- A power bank for your phone
- Your ticket, ready to show at boarding
When to book
Seats go quickly around weekends, long holidays and the winter tourist season. Booking a few days ahead gives you a real choice of departure time and seat. For Eid and other major holidays, book as early as you can.
