The Dhaka to Sylhet bus takes you from the capital to the green north-east: tea gardens, rivers coming down from the Meghalaya hills, swamp forest and the shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal. Buses run day and night, and the trip fits comfortably into a morning or a night. Here is what to know before you book.

How long does the Dhaka to Sylhet bus take?

The road distance is roughly 240 kilometres on the Dhaka–Sylhet highway, and the bus usually takes 5 to 7 hours. As on every route out of the capital, traffic decides the real time: leaving Dhaka at rush hour, busy market towns along the highway, and the days before Eid and long weekends can all add hours.

Use the time on your ticket as an estimate and keep your first evening in Sylhet free of anything tight.

The road to Sylhet

The highway leaves Dhaka to the east, crosses into Narsingdi, passes Bhairab on the Meghna and runs on through Brahmanbaria and Habiganj. Dhaka–Sylhet buses stop at Shaistaganj and pass close to Satchari National Park, a hill forest known for gibbons and birds. The last stretch runs through Moulvibazar district before the bus reaches Sylhet city.

Most buses take one meal break. Keep your ticket and valuables with you whenever you get off.

Day bus or night bus?

Day buses are the pleasant choice for this route: the scenery gets greener the further you go, and you arrive in daylight, ready to settle in.

Night buses let you start sightseeing the next morning. They work well if you plan an early day trip, because the spots around Sylhet are spread out and an early start helps.

If you are travelling in the rainy season, a day bus also means you arrive while ghats and roads are easier to check.

AC or non-AC?

  • AC buses are much more comfortable in the hot, humid months, which on this route is most of the year
  • Non-AC buses are the budget option and work well on cool winter days
  • On a night journey, more legroom and a seat that reclines properly make a real difference

Check the ticket’s cancellation and change rules before you pay.

Where to board and where you arrive

Dhaka has several bus terminals and many counters. Pick the boarding point closest to you rather than crossing the city in traffic, and arrive 15 to 20 minutes before departure. Your ticket shows the exact boarding and drop-off points.

In Sylhet city, CNGs and rickshaws take you anywhere in town. For trips outside the city, most people hire a CNG, car or microbus for the day.

Best time to go

Sylhet has two good seasons, and they are very different:

  • June to October is the time for rivers, waterfalls and the haor, when everything is full and green
  • November to February is dry and cool, best for the tea gardens and walking

In the rainy season, roads and boat ghats can close after heavy rain, so ask locally on the morning of each trip.

Day trips from Sylhet city

Our Sylhet guide covers food, areas to stay and getting around. The classic trips:

  • Jaflong, about 60 kilometres away on the Tamabil road, where the river comes down from the hills
  • Lalakhal, a boat ride up the blue-green Sari river from Sarighat, easy to combine with Jaflong
  • Ratargul Swamp Forest, about an hour away, explored by small boat from Motorghat
  • Bisnakandi, by road to Hadarpar and then by boat

In the city itself, visit Hazrat Shah Jalal’s Shrine and walk across the Surma by the old Keane Bridge.

For a wetland trip, Tanguar Haor in Sunamganj is reached by bus to Sunamganj and then by road to Tahirpur, where boats and houseboats leave.

Sreemangal and the tea gardens

You do not have to go all the way to Sylhet city for tea country. Moulvibazar district, which the highway crosses, holds the Sreemangal tea gardens and Lawachara National Park, about 8 kilometres from Sreemangal town. Buses from Dhaka reach Moulvibazar and Sreemangal in about 4 to 5 hours, and Sreemangal is about 2 to 2.5 hours from Sylhet by bus or train. Many travellers combine both: a night in Sylhet, then a night among the tea gardens.

Try satkora beef and akhni in Sylhet, and Sreemangal’s seven-layer tea.

Tips for the trip

  • Carry a light layer for the AC and a rain jacket in the monsoon
  • Keep a power bank; your ticket and maps are on your phone
  • On boat trips, agree the price and the time before you set off, and ask for life jackets
  • Book early for weekends, long holidays and the monsoon season, when Sylhet is busy
