History

According to its inscription, the mosque was built in 1483 by Malik Kafur in the reign of Sultan Jalaluddin Fateh Shah of Bengal. It is named after Baba Adam Shahid, a saint whose tomb lies close by and about whom many local legends are told, including of a battle with the Sena king Ballal Sen.

The building is a compact rectangle of brick with six domes in two rows, thick walls, curved cornices and fine terracotta decoration on the facade and mihrabs — typical of the sultanate architecture of Bengal.

It is a protected monument and is still used for prayer, which makes it a living piece of 15th-century Bengal rather than a ruin.
