History

Across the Someshwari from Durgapur, the land rises into low hills of white and pale-coloured clay. This is china clay, or kaolin, used for ceramics, and it has been dug here for decades.

Where the clay has been taken out, the pits have filled with rain and groundwater that takes on vivid blue and green colours against the white slopes. The contrast has made Bijoypur one of the most photographed places in the region.

The hills sit close to the border with Meghalaya, with BGB posts nearby, and from the higher ground you can see the Garo Hills rising beyond.

Travel tips

  • This is a border area: carry your national ID or passport, follow BGB instructions and stay well away from the border line.
  • Do not swim in the clay-pit lakes; they are deep and their sides are steep and slippery.
  • Clay slopes are very slippery when wet; wear shoes with grip and avoid the edges.
  • Mining may be going on; keep out of working areas.
  • No drones near the border.
  • Carry water and leave no litter.
