Culture

The fair is a village festival in the old Bengali sense: worship at the temple, kirtan, stalls selling sweets, toys, clay and household goods, and families visiting from far away.

History

Gopinathpur takes its name from Gopinath, a name of Krishna, and its temple is one of the oldest and best-known Hindu places of worship in Joypurhat. The present buildings have been repaired and added to over the years, but the site has been a place of worship for generations.

The temple is best known for its yearly fair, when devotees and traders come from across the district and beyond, and the village fills with stalls, music and prayers. Outside the fair it is a peaceful village temple.
