Culture

Shiva Ratri is the main festival, with all-night worship and a fair on the grounds. Other Hindu festivals are also celebrated here through the year.

History

The Kal Bhairab temple at Medda is one of the most important Hindu places of worship in eastern Bangladesh. Its towering image of Kal Bhairab, a fierce form of Shiva, is among the tallest of its kind in the country and dominates the inner sanctum.

The temple has stood for generations on the bank of the Titas, and it has been repaired and rebuilt over the years. Devotees come from across the region, and from across the border, especially at festival times.

The great day is Shiva Ratri, when the temple and its grounds fill with pilgrims, prayers and a fair.
