History

Madhabpur Lake lies inside the Madhabpur tea estate in Kamalganj, where a stream was dammed between the hills to hold water for the garden. The lake bends between steep tea slopes, and in the warmer months its surface is covered with water lilies.

A path runs along the water and up onto the low hills, from where you see the lake curling away between rows of tea bushes. Beyond the estate, towards the border, are Khasi and Manipuri villages.

It is a working tea garden, not a park: the pluckers you see on the slopes are at work, and the lake is part of the estate.

Travel tips

  • Respect the garden: stay on the paths, do not pick tea leaves, and ask before photographing workers.
  • Do not swim in the lake.
  • Wear shoes with grip; the hill paths are slippery after rain.
  • Bring water and go in the morning or late afternoon; there is little shade on the slopes.
  • Entry rules can change; check locally.
