Culture

  • The Adinath fair around Shivratri, in the Bangla month of Falgun, draws pilgrims from across the country; the island is crowded and festive for days.
  • The Rakhine community keeps Buddhist monasteries and pagodas here, and celebrates Sangrai in April.
  • Island life turns on paan, salt and fish: you will pass betel gardens, white salt pans and fish drying in the sun.

History

Maheshkhali is an island just across the channel from Cox’s Bazar town, and the only hilly island in Bangladesh. Low green hills run down its middle, and mangroves, salt pans, shrimp farms and betel-leaf gardens fill the flat land around them.

On the hill called Mainak stands the Adinath temple, an old temple to Shiva and one of the important Hindu places of pilgrimage in the region. Nearby are Buddhist pagodas and Rakhine monasteries, and a mosque, so the island’s faiths sit side by side.

Maheshkhali is also famous for its betel leaf (paan), sold all over the country, and the boat ride across through the mangrove channel is a pleasure in itself. It makes a relaxed day trip, very different from the beach.

Plan your visit

Best time to visit

November to March, when the crossing is calm; the Adinath fair is held around Shivratri in February or March

How to get there

By speedboat or trawler from Kasturi Ghat (6 No. Jetty) in town; the speedboat takes about 15–20 minutes.

Getting around

  • From the jetty, rickshaws, vans and easy-bikes go to the Adinath temple, the pagodas and the market.
  • The temple is at the top of a flight of steps; the rest of the island’s sights are on fairly flat roads.
  • Hire one driver for the whole loop and arrange to be taken back to the jetty.

Travel tips

  • Wear the life jacket on the speedboat, and do not cross in rough weather or after dark.
  • At the Adinath temple, dress modestly and take off your shoes; ask before taking photos inside.
  • The steps up Mainak hill are steep — go early and carry water.
  • Agree the fare with your rickshaw or van driver for the whole loop, including waiting time.
  • Check the time of the last boat back to Cox’s Bazar when you arrive.
