History

The Marine Drive is the coastal road from Kolatoli in Cox’s Bazar south to Teknaf, about 80 km long. For most of the way it runs between the beach on one side and forested hills on the other, so the drive itself is the attraction.

Built by the Bangladesh Army’s engineers to protect the coast and open up the villages along it, the road opened in full in 2017. Before it, much of this shore could only be reached by sand tracks or along the beach at low tide.

Along the way are Himchari’s hills and waterfall, the rocky beach at Inani, quiet fishing villages, betel-nut groves and long empty stretches of sand where you can stop and walk. At the southern end, Teknaf looks across the Naf river to Myanmar.

Plan your visit

Best time to visit

November to March for clear skies; late afternoon for the light and the sunset over the sea

How to get there

Starts at Kolatoli. Hire a CNG, jeep or easy-bike for a half or full day to stop along the way.

Getting around

  • CNGs are the usual choice for two or three people; jeeps suit a larger group.
  • Easy-bikes are fine for the short run to Himchari, less so for Inani and beyond.
  • Some visitors rent a motorbike in town; only if you are an experienced rider with a helmet.
  • Local buses to Teknaf also use the road, but you cannot stop where you like.

Travel tips

  • Hire your CNG or jeep for the whole trip, agree the price and the stops before you set off, and keep the same driver for the way back.
  • Start in the morning if you want to go all the way to Teknaf and back in one day.
  • The beaches along the road mostly have no lifeguards: do not swim there, especially in the monsoon.
  • Traffic is fast on the open stretches; take care crossing the road and stopping at the roadside.
  • Carry water and a hat — shade and shops are few between the villages.
