History

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was born at Tungipara on 17 March 1920. He led the Awami League and the movement for the rights of East Pakistan’s Bengalis, and became the leader of Bangladesh’s independence; he is widely known as Bangabandhu, “friend of Bengal”.

On 15 August 1975 he was assassinated in Dhaka together with most of his family. He was buried at Tungipara, in the family graveyard beside his parents.

A mausoleum complex was later built around the grave. It includes the tomb, the family’s ancestral home and other buildings, and receives visitors from across the country.
