History

Mir Mosharraf Hossain (1847–1911) was one of the first great Muslim writers of modern Bangla prose. He was born at Lahinipara near Kumarkhali, and as a young man wrote for Kangal Harinath’s Grambarta Prakashika, printed close by.

His best-known work, Bishad Sindhu, retells the tragedy of Karbala in rich, rolling prose and has been read across Bengal for well over a century. He also wrote plays, including Jamidar Darpan, about the oppression of tenants by landlords.

At Lahinipara a memorial and library keep his name alive. It is a quiet, village place rather than a grand monument — worth a stop for readers on the way to or from Shilaidaha.
