History

Patenga is Chattogram’s own beach, at the southern tip of the city where the Karnaphuli river flows into the Bay of Bengal. It is not a sandy resort beach like Cox’s Bazar: much of the shore is a long concrete and stone embankment built to hold back the sea, with a strip of sand and rocks below it.

What draws people is the view. Out in the bay, dozens of cargo ships and tankers lie at anchor, waiting their turn to enter Chattogram port, the country’s busiest. Planes from Shah Amanat International Airport, right behind the beach, pass low overhead, and in the evening the sun sets over the water.

The coast here has known hard times — the cyclone of 1991 struck this shore with great force — and the embankment is part of how the city protects itself. Today, on any evening and especially on holidays, the promenade is full of families, food stalls and horse rides: a simple, lively place to end a day in Chattogram.

Plan your visit

Best time to visit

November to February, in the late afternoon for the sunset. Avoid stormy days in the monsoon.

How to get there

About 20 km from the city centre, past the airport: 45 minutes to an hour by CNG or ride-hailing car.

Travel tips

  • Do not swim. The currents at the river mouth are strong and the shore is rocky; paddle only at the edge, and stay off the rocks and embankment when waves are high.
  • Come about an hour before sunset, and leave enough time for the ride back through city traffic.
  • Weekends and holidays are very crowded; weekday evenings are calmer.
  • Ask the price before buying food or taking a horse or bike ride.
  • Keep phones and wallets close in the crowd.
