Culture

Each year around Tagore’s birthday (25 Boishakh), Patisar hosts celebrations with songs, recitations, discussions and a village fair, drawing visitors from across the region.

History

Patisar was the headquarters of the Kaligram estate of the Tagore family. Rabindranath Tagore first came here in the early 1890s to manage the family’s lands and returned many times over the following decades, arriving by boat along the rivers and staying in the kachharibari, the estate office and residence.

Patisar shaped his ideas about rural life. He set up schools and a dispensary for his tenants and founded the Patisar Krishi Bank to give farmers cheap credit, later putting money from his Nobel Prize into it. Several of his poems and letters were written here.

The kachharibari is now a memorial museum looked after by the Department of Archaeology, with Tagore’s belongings, photographs and the house itself, beside the Nagar river.
