A math in Bengal is a tall, tapering tower built in memory of a person, usually by a wealthy family, and many were raised in the zamindar era. The math at Rudrakar is one of the most recognisable old landmarks in Shariatpur, rising high above the surrounding village.
Local accounts link it to a zamindar family of the area. Like much of the district’s heritage, it has survived the floods and river erosion that took many other old buildings.
It is a short, quiet visit — worth it for its height and form, and for a look at the countryside around Shariatpur town.
Take a CNG or auto-rickshaw from Shariatpur town in the morning.
Walk around the tower and the village around it.
Return to Shariatpur town for a fish-and-rice lunch.
In the afternoon, head to Jajira to see the Padma Bridge at sunset.
