Culture

Tagore’s birth anniversary on 25 Boishakh is celebrated at the Kuthibari with music, recitation and a fair, often over several days; check the programme locally.

History

Shilaidaha was part of the Tagore family’s zamindari. From the early 1890s Rabindranath Tagore came here to manage the estates, living in the Kuthibari and travelling the Padma and its channels in the family houseboat. The years he spent here shaped him: many poems, short stories and the letters later collected as Chhinnapatra grew out of life by the river and among its villages.

It was also at Shilaidaha, in 1912, that he began translating his own songs into English — the work that became the English Gitanjali and led to the Nobel Prize in 1913.

The Kuthibari is a large building with terraces and a distinctive tiered roof, set in grounds with ponds and old trees. It is protected by the Department of Archaeology and kept as a museum, with Tagore’s furniture, photographs and paintings.
