Need a break from the city? These weekend trips from Dhaka, from Sonargaon’s Panam City and the Bhawal forest to Mawa, Wari-Bateshwar, Nikli Haor, Mymensingh and Sreemangal, are all reachable by bus, with travel times and tips.

Dhaka is busy, and sometimes you just need to get out. The good news is that some of the best weekend trips from Dhaka are only an hour or two away by bus: old capitals, sal forests, the Padma riverside, an ancient buried town and wide monsoon haors. Here are the easiest getaways, from simple day trips to two-night breaks, with honest travel times.

One rule applies to every trip below: leave early. Traffic out of Dhaka can double the journey time later in the day, and an early start turns a rushed trip into a relaxed one.

Day trips: one to two hours away

Sonargaon and Panam City

The medieval capital of Bengal is a classic day out. Panam City is a single, narrow street of 19th and early 20th-century merchant houses with arches, cast-iron balconies and carved pillars, now a protected heritage site. A few minutes away, the Sonargaon Folk Art and Crafts Museum stands in a restored mansion with a lake and gardens.

Getting there: take a Chattogram- or Cumilla-bound bus on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway to Mograpara, then a CNG or battery auto to Sonargaon. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours with traffic. Go on a weekday if you can, and check the closing days before you leave. If you have time, the Mughal Hajiganj Fort is in Narayanganj city.

Bhawal National Park and Nuhash Palli

The easiest green escape from the capital. Bhawal National Park protects a stretch of the old sal forest beside the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway, with shaded walks, lakes and picnic spots. Ask any Mymensingh- or Sreepur-bound bus to drop you at the park gate.

Nearby, Nuhash Palli is the garden estate the writer Humayun Ahmed created, where he is buried, a place of trees and ponds for his many readers. Read more in our Gazipur guide.

Getting there: buses run from Mohakhali, Gulistan and the airport road. The distance is short, but traffic decides: allow 1 to 2 hours to Gazipur, plus 30 to 45 minutes to the park.

Mawa and the Padma

Mawa sits at the northern end of the Padma Bridge, famous for its fried-hilsa restaurants and wide views of the great river. It is about an hour by bus from Jatrabari on the Dhaka–Mawa expressway. Hilsa is best in the monsoon. Across the river, the Padma Bridge, Jajira End gives a view of the bridge stretching across the water.

Combine Mawa with old Bikrampur: the Mughal Idrakpur Fort in Munshiganj town and Baba Adam’s Mosque, built in 1483 at Rampal.

Wari-Bateshwar

For something different, visit Wari-Bateshwar in Narsingdi, the excavated remains of a fortified town more than two thousand years old, with ramparts, a moat and a brick-paved road. Set your expectations: it is open fields and trenches in a working village, not a park. Do not dig, pick up or buy artefacts.

Getting there: a bus on the Dhaka–Sylhet highway to Narsingdi takes 1.5 to 2 hours; then on towards Belabo or Marjal and a CNG to Wari village, another 1 to 1.5 hours. November to March is best.

Zamindar palaces west and north of Dhaka

  • Baliati Zamindar Bari in Manikganj, a row of grand 19th-century palace buildings with tall columns; buses to Saturia leave from Gabtoli
  • Atia Mosque near Tangail, a Mughal-era mosque from 1609 with rich terracotta, about 30 minutes from Tangail town, which is 2 to 3 hours by bus from Mohakhali

One night away

Nikli Haor

From about July to October, Nikli Haor in Kishoreganj becomes an inland sea, with a long embankment road, village islands and boat rides to the horizon. It is an easy introduction to haor life.

Getting there: buses to Kishoreganj from Mohakhali or Sayedabad take about 3 to 4 hours, then a CNG or local bus to Nikli, 1 to 1.5 hours. Staying a night makes it relaxed. Insist on life jackets, avoid stormy days and be back on shore before dark.

Mymensingh

A green river town on the Old Brahmaputra, Mymensingh is 3 to 4 hours by bus from Mohakhali. See the zamindar palace of Shashi Lodge, the Zainul Abedin Museum in the riverside park, and Muktagachha Zamindar Bari, about 16 kilometres west, where you should taste the town’s famous monda.

Two nights away

Sreemangal and the tea gardens

For a proper break, go to the tea country. Buses from Dhaka reach Sreemangal in about 4 to 5 hours. Walk the Sreemangal tea gardens, try seven-layer tea, and spend a morning in Lawachara National Park, about 8 kilometres from town. The estates are working land: walk on roads and paths and do not pick leaves. Book a room ahead for weekends.

Tips for weekend trips

  • Check opening days for museums and heritage sites locally before you leave
